There's lots and lots of replies ... for a start, in many countries they will start English right from primary school ... we don't do that in England with foreign languages, partly ( mainly ?) because we haven't got the teachers to do it ! And we've no idea really about which language to actually do .... Mandarin seems to be the fad at the moment, which I reckon is ridiculous. And German is fading out drastically, because schools want good results, and German is trickier than French ..... so they push for French, and German is sidelined. The numbers taking German have dropped dramatically over the last few years.
BUT .... what nearly everybody mentions is ... yep .... they listened to English/US pop music and watched English/US films. Oh yes !!!
And with youtube awash with "lyrics" videos you are all totally spoilt for choice these days. So ... I reckon it's realistic to have a go at learning a German song each week..... or more, if you're good at that sort of thing.
But ... if it's going to help with your German, you need to know what it all means, so translating it all is important too.
But some words videos are better than others ... some have lyrics that lag a bit behind the music, especially at the end/start of a line or verse ... and others use cranky, hard-to-read or too-small writing. So, it's best to look around for good ones ... like this one for the classic WSH song "Nur ein Wort" .... I think this is the best and clearest one for it .... several others have that daft handwriting-type of lettering... anyhow, decide for yourself .... and this is such an iconic German song it is an absolute must ! Here we go ...
You know it makes sense.
