I think you'll like this ... it's a video of a "Die Toten Hosen" song which the presenter uses as a vehicle to teach you some German ... it's an interesting idea .... have a look and a listen ...

SCHIELD GAUZE I know it's only two words, but it's taken ages to find any at all.. and don't forget the other one a few posts ago. That's ,er, three. Right ... moving on .... here's Sportfreunde Stiller with " Fast wie von selbst " A near-neighbour of ours is moving into a bungalow soon. She mentioned this to somebody, and they told her that you should never move into a bungalow because you would soon get " bungalow legs." "Bungalow Legs" means that you will lose the ability to go upstairs! I can see what they mean... brilliant! In a similar way, we should try not to neglect our German skills, whatever stage they are at! Because there's your warning ... stop doing things for a while and you might well get the German-learners equivalent of "Bungalow Legs" and find yourself slipping backwards horribly down die Treppe! Ouch. I should know, because it happened to me. I was merrily learning German, I'd read lots of books, got a good vocabulary, knew lots of stuff, and when I'd nearly finished reading Winnie the Pooh in German I went into a shop and picked off the shelf a copy of the first Harry Potter book ... Harri Potter a Maen yr Athronydd. [a] That was a big mistake. Because it was in Welsh. [2] My second mistake was opening it and flicking through it. [3] My third mistake was thinking " Cripes, this is a real bastard of a language ! I don't understand one single cotton-picking word. Crumbs. [4] I there and then became determined to learn the blasted thing. That was my 4th mistake. [5] Welsh is by far the most ridiculous language to learn bar none. It's a lifetime's work just learning how to look Welsh words up in the dictionary. Oh yes.Even getting to that point was a big mistake. My 5th actually. [6] My 6th mistake was actually spending billions of hours getting to the stage where I could read grown-up Welsh books, understand a lot of what Welsh people said and even speak a stumbling and slowed-down version of Welsh. [7] And here's the thing ... all through that I neglected German. And lo and behold, when I went back to finish reading the last bit of Winnie the Pooh ( Pu der Bär) I suddenly realised I had forgotten stacks and stacks of German words. [8] Ouch ! So .... don't neglect your German ... it'll come back to bite you. DON'T DEVELOP THOSE BUNGALOW LEGS ..and now, a sad, sad song .... it's WSH and the snappily-titled " Meine Freunde war im Koma und alles, was sie mir mitgebracht hat, war dieses lausige T-Shirt." Here's my very own handy guide to looking up words in a Welsh dictionary ..what could possibly go wrong ? It's from my Welsh blog, cleverly entitled Learn Welsh in 88 Years..
In a previous life, or rather a previous blog, I did a wonderful thing. I wrote ... or rather, had a go at writing ..... a complete guide to looking up Welsh words in a dictionary. It took weeks for me to get back some semblance of my sanity, and several bottles of gin. All you beginners out there will be thinking ... " What could possibly go wrong?" Ha! You poor deluded numpties are in for a shock...... the Welsh language is especially designed to make it almost impenetrable to all outsiders, and trying to look words up in what they laughingly refer to as a dictionary can be, to say the least, trying. For your delectation, I am going to try to recreate that terrific article, but with the added experience I have gained since .... negotiating that eponymous Rocky Road to Welsh! Here we go .... Here's the scenario ..... you've got a Welsh word and you want to find out what it means. The clever-arses always advise you to try to work out what it means from the context. Yeah, right! And I'm a spurgulent rimpletinker. So ..... You turn to your trusted dictionary ,and the bloody thing isn't in it. Here's a simple guide to what might have gone wrong...... [a] Maybe it's an obscure word .....try a succession of larger and larger dictionaries. [b] If it starts with ch- you might be looking for it under c- which would be the wrong place. [c] This also applies to rh- , ll- , ff- . [d] Don't forget that a word with -ng- in it could have you looking in the wrong place. [e] The word might have to have any possible mutation undone first. [f] This is doubly tricky for some words beginning with f- which might begin with m- or b- [g] This is easy to miss also when an invisible g- has to be restored to its rightful place. [h] An "h" at the start might have been put there for a laugh ... especially after a vowel. [h2] Sometimes adding -ach and -a in comparatives can change the spelling of the word. [i] Maybe it's a bit of obscure Wenglish. [j] Sometimes they like to miss the ys- off a word to keep you thinking. [k] Maybe you're looking at some wild and wonderful part of a verb. [l] Or perhaps you've forgotten that verbs-with-endings will tend to SM. [m] It could be you are looking at one of those peculiar plurals they are so fond of. [n] In colloquial Welsh in books, deliberate mis- spelling is another source of amusement. [o] Could be you have a conjugated preposition like "amdano" .... lovely! [p] One of the best tricks in the "frontal apostrophe." [ or 'tal 'phe ] [q] Of course, it might be a rude word, or too slangy. Yes, there are rude words in Welsh. [r] You can pull some words apart and find out what the bits mean..... oh yes! [s] If it has a prefix, you can remove it and try to find what's left ( remove SM first) [t] Could it be a proper name or a place-name? [u] If it's a group of words you don't get, maybe it's a an idiomatic usage. [t] Some words have different male and female versions .... [u] Sometimes a tricky word might combine several of these difficulties. [v] There can be unfamiliar "literary" Welsh verb endings... never used in real speech. [w] Sometimes you think a word is obviously Wenglish but it isn't ! [x ] You can always try ... [a] Putting it into Google Translate [b] Having a guess and looking it up in the English to Welsh section. ... it can work. [c] Asking an actual Welsh speaker ! [d] Taking up a nice logical language like Spanish. [e] Retiring to a monastery/nunnery .. it's easier, and calmer. Here's a new way to liven up your "German Reading Experience". And let's be honest, you often need it. The "livening-up" I mean. AND .. I invented it ... but like many other of my "inventions" they usually turn out to be well known way back in the past.. often scratched on the giant pillars of Stonehenge, or painted on the lids of sarcophagi (?) deep inside those pyramid scheme thingys in the desert. Here's what you do ... you're just starting the 46th chapter ( " Die Ente" ) of your current "read" and you're looking forward to more old guff about the one that terrorised the streets of Berlin back in 1614 ...so you really need to liven things up a bit ... give yourself a reason to live /sorry, carry on reading ... so here's what you do .. You make yourself a list of special words you might expect to find in that chapter, a sort of bucket list... and then, when they turn up, and you have correctly predicted them, you score points. Seeing as this chapter is about mad women and witches and potions and poor sanitation and terrible diseases and declining bus services and low levels on literacy, + widespread inbreeding and genetic drift, you've got plenty of possible target words. Here's the sort of list you might make ... from most likely to least likely ... we'll have ten of them.... your only clue really is the title .. [1] quaken [2] der Schnabel [3] die Feder [4] picken [5] die Haube [6] das Brot [7] hupen [8] der Teich [9] braten [10] zerquetschen Then you get reading the chapter, with the added frisson of the search !! Let's say you find die Feder first ... you get 3 points becausee it's 3rd in the list. A page later you find zerquetschen ( oh Weh, oh Weh) and you score 10 because it's tenth in the list. You might be wondering what die Haube and hupen are doing in there. Well, German culture fans, here's a couple of clues ... No, I didn't know either... so I thought I'd better stick a few car-related words in there as well... mind you , I hedged my bets a bit with "bonnet" and "hoot" because [a] fictional ducks sometimes wear bonnets ( but the German word is different) and people hoot at ducks in the road. But this isn't all about ducks ... that chapter might have been about anything... Here's a few more ducks of various types for you..... And now, here's Die Toten Hosen ...
Here's the second half of those "German Instructions" I showed you a few posts ago.... and very instructional they were too ... so let's see the rest of them shall we .... ... ACHTUNG! And now, it's music time .... currently rising up the rankings in the " Best German Music Time in South Rutland " from 2573rd up to 2528th. Yes, it's the " PAW PATROL BUBBLE GUN" in all its glory. And now, of course, you'll know how to use it and what to do if 'owt goes wrong.
In Spanish, the original language in which it was written, it's La Casa de los Espiritos. In French it's La Maison aux Esprits. But in German they don't mess about 1 It's Das Geisterhaus ! It's a classic of Magic Realism ... it's the sort of book where a nearby relative rolls up to the house, comes in, wanders around looking at things and then leaves. As soon as she's gone the cry goes up .."she's dead!" ..and they all rush round to her house and find her rotting away on a table. Oh yes !! That's always happening round our way. Anyhow, it's a good book, if rather long and very very odd. But what I really wanted to write about is the whole "Geist" business in general ..... ..for a start, it doesn't just mean "ghost" .. it also means "mind" ... aha! ooh-er! Look at this lot ... in the order I found them ... ± der Geist ghost, mind geistesabwesend absent-minded geisteskrank mentally ill geisteskrankheit mental illness geistig intellectual der Geisterfahrer ghost-driver, person driving in the wring direction geisterhaft ghostly der Geistesakrobat mental acrobat der Geistesblitz brainwave die Geistesgegenwart presence of mind geistesgegenwärtig quick-witted geistesgestört mentally disturbed die Geisteshaltung mental attitude der Geisteszustand state of mind die Geistesverfassung frame of mind die Geisteswissenschaften arts (subjects) geistlich spiritual, religious die Geistkeit clergy geistlos uninspired, dull geistreich clever das Geisterbild "double image" on TV geisttötend soul-destrying geistvoll intellectual der Geisterbanner exorcist der Geisterseher visionary, one who sees ghosts die Geistesgabe talent geistesverwand congenial der Geistlicher clergyman, vicar geistern to haunt Cripes ... that's just some of them... let's have the music now ... it's Silbermond with a different sort of "haus" ... das "Kartenhaus" ... ich such nach dem was mich vergessen lässt
I know that there is a trend for capital letters to be used much less for German nouns, but surely not to that extent !! ?? ] What's all this then ? .... Yes .. it's a 5-star Amazon.de review of top LP " Für Usszeschnigge" by BAP. And you'll be astounded to hear that I've actually got it ... 50p from a local charity shop.... who could resist it ? It's got a huge fold-out insert inside the sleeve with all the typed-out words complete with hand-written alterations. Classic stuff. Here they are with their big hit number .... FROCK Well, that's clever isn't it !! I bet you could find some more like that ... so why not have a go. Meanwhile, here's Juli .. "Perfeckte Welle" but is she wearing ein Rock ? I did a similar, but rather more varied thing like that up there, some time back ... it's here ...
the-best-german-homework-ever.html This is the 78th post on here ... and that's an important number for me .. my previous German blog disappeared into the great expanses of Nowheresville just as I reached the 78th post. All my other blogs went with it. That wasn't very nice, and I've no idea where they went or why. Humph. It took me a good while to start all over again. We all love them very much ... so here are some ..... I found this lot on the pavement a week or two ago ... ACHTUNG ! Erstickungsgefahr durch Kleinteile.- nicht geeignet für Kinder unter 3 Jahren. And it's the cunningly spelt 2Raumwohnung and " Bei Dir bin ich schön" ..... |
