Oh yes ! Fireman Sam in German..... fasten your safety belts .... Plenty more where that came from.

Study these German words closely .... they've all got something in common. They all come from the same place .... pro er Ort Wirt Pore Wort Ire pur treu Ei Treue wirr quitt quer Pute Puter irre Where have they all come from ? Can you find some more ? What is the longest one you can find ? Could you write a meaningful message in this way ? ..and after that mysterious diversion into the strange world of German words, here's Clueso and " Gewinner" ..and here's a words video to go with it ... The " Kleine Nick" books ( Le Petit Nicolas in the original French) are a must for any reader with a milligram of humour in their veins. I've read them all in French and most of them in Spanish and never tire of them.... and it's very important for us language learners to have as much fun as we can along the way . Unlike the book I talked about last time ( Zazie) these books use fairly simple language. Another good thing is that the books are gettable in English too, which certainly can be a big help. Nick is, I suppose, about 8 or 9 and has a bunch of friends and enemies in school and out of it. Unlike his older alter ego, William Brown, much of the "action" is in school with their long-suffering teacher, and much of the humour derives from [a] their incredible ability to turn the simplest things into utter disaster and [b] their complete inability to understand adults. Their teacher takes them to an Art Gallery. Chaos ensues. On the way back they ask their teacher when their next visit will be ... she points out that they won't be going again. Nick's reaction ... oh, she doesn't like art. With every story, after the first few sentences you are busy trying to work out what exactly is going to go wrong ... it's quite addictive. And that's what you want when you are reading to learn .. a real reason to get those pages turned, a real want to understand what's going on. So, that's today's recommendation. And therefore it's music time, and this Music Spot has been voted as #25744 in the " World's most interesting German music portal" category. Today's choice is Herbstrock ..... " Denn Weisst Du Nicht " I have written more about "Kleine Nick" in the future .... here it is ....
136-eine-erinnerung-furs-leben.html I bet you're wondering how I did that !! Zazie in der Metro is a very famous book ..well, in its original French version it was anyway ... it's been made into a film and musicals etc, and numerous critics have weighted in with their opinions. ... plus its style was very innovative and influential. Raymond Queneau was a remarkable writer...... one of his tricks was mucking about with words. The very first word in the French version is ... "Doukipudonktan" And in the German version it's .........................."Fonwostinktsnso" Have a go at working them both out .. it helps to say them quickly out loud. All through the book you get that sort of thing.... which makes it rather challenging... plus the book is full of slangy words as well. Also, the adults are a peculiar bunch, who seem to spend all their time in bars drinking vicious species of cocktails. On top of all that, Zazie herself is a bit of a pain in the arse. The whole thing is an exhilarating read though, so that's OK. It's also quite thin. If your German reading ability is pretty good, I recommend it.... and even for those of you of slightly less reading acumen, it would be a good long-term project. And now, here's Juli with "Zerrissen " ..... Was hat dich so verletzt? Was hat dich so zerrissen? Was hat dich so verletzt? Was hat dich so verletzt? Was hat dich so zerrissen? Was hat dich so verletzt? Was hat dich so zerrissen? Was hat dich so zerrissen... Was hat dich so zerrissen? Was hat dich so verletzt? Was auch immer du tust Was auch immer du sagst Ich pass auf dich auf Ich bleib für dich wach Ich bleib für dich wach Was auch immer du tust Was auch immer du sagst Ich pass auf dich auf Ich bleib für dich wach Ich bleib für dich wach This isn't actually about ghostly ghosts at all... you know, those things that rearrange the furniture overnight, or that glide silently at midnight through the corridors of a monastery. Not those. German ghosts is a great way to entertain yourself or all of you on a car journey. Let's suppose that you spot the number plate TR7 FRN Just concentrate on that FRN bit. FRN is a ghost ... the ghost of a word ... many words actually. It's the ghost of führen and Freund and auftreten and Haferflocken and unfreundlich and heranfahren Can you see what 's going on.... with each of those words, if some of the letters died, you could be left with FRN ..... führen Freund aufreten Haferflocken unfreundlich heranfahren So, a ""ghost" is what's left after some of the letters have gone, disappeared, kicked the bucket, given up the ...... ghost. Right then... that's your car journey in-car-entertainment sorted ... question time ... What other words have FRN as their ghost? What about ABA ? How about NET ? And ........... ABC ? Well, I hope you liked that ..... there's plenty of other number-plate games ... no doubt I will be filling you in at some point ... but now here's Nena with " Leuchtturm" I don't know about you, but I find some words are particularly hard to remember .... jemals, dort, fast, daher, seltsam, ähnlich, deshalb ....there's nothing for your brain to get hold of.... they aren't good solid stuff like nouns, they aren't doing anything like verbs do .... they're just piddling around in between . One way to help you remember what they mean is by using book titles ... try translating these, and maybe inventing other book titles of your own, or finding more for yourself. It's interesting to do, and it reinforces your memorisation of the words you use. Während ............ Irgendwo .... Plötzlich .... Beinahe .... Kaum ... The last resort, of course, is bloody flashcards ... but used sparingly and intelligently, they can do a job for words you just can't keep in there. And now, here's a fine impromptu performance by the Klee singer, Suzie Kerstgens, in a shopping arcade by the looks of it, of "Zwei Herzen" ... (Strophe 1)
So ... there's this biker, and he wants to have BLACK SABBATH written on his bike helmet, so he buys a packet of 200 assorted stick-on alphabet letters. But when he gets home and tips them out onto the table, he soon discovers that they are all from the first half of the alphabet. After a lot of thinking, and a bit of compromise, he does his best and decides on BLACK CABBAGE. It's not perfect, but it's the closest he can get. Anyhow ... suppose you were faced with that problem ... only being able to use the first half of the German alphabet. There would be shed-loads of words you couldn't make. All you could use would be ..... A B C D E F G H I J K L M and NOT ......o p q r s t u v w x y z ( we'll assume that ß=ss) There's quite a few 2-letter words .... ab, am, ja for a start. There's some 3-letter words .... mal springs to mind for example. 4-letter words.... So , dear readers .... [a] what else can you make ? [b] would you be better off with the other half ? While you think about that, here's Astra Kid with "Für etwas mehr als dich" No words, so ...
I hope you all keep a diary .... start now if you don't .... apart from anything else, it's an excellent place to use a bit of German. But panic not .. it doesn't have to be totally German ...any bits you can drop in will do for now. Plus, it doesn't matter if you get it a bit wrong. That's important ... "fear of getting it wrong" is a huge barrier for many learners. Plus ... diaries tend to use a limited range of expressions ... also a big help. This means you can compile a sort of " Diary words and phrases" list. You may think that's cheating .. but repetition is a huge boost to learning a language. Repetition repetition repetition repetition repetition repetition repetition repetition... Here's some examples of " diary words and phrases" from my very own list ... wie eh und je .... as always meinen .. to think warscheinlich .... probably, likely etwa .... about, roughly bedeuten ... to mean, to signify zufällig .... luckily, by chance beobachten ... to watch, to observe vorkommen .. to happen, to occur das Ding .. the thing sozusagen ... so to speak nach und nach ... gradually trüb = cloudy, dull elend ... miserable gestern .. yesterday das Pech ... bad luck der Pechvogel ... unlucky person überascht ..surprised immerhin ... after all traurig ... sad, dismal zunächst ... first of all passend ... suitable zumindest ... at least manche ... many der Besuch ... visit bis ... up to, till sonst ... else/otherwise/formerly ruhen .. to rest das Geheimnis ... secret diesmal ... this time anschauen ... to look at Obviously your list might be very different ... it depends on what you do all day, what your interests are ... but writing a diary means you are going to use this stuff every day, and that way you'll learn it, expand it ... it has to be Terrific For your German. Here's Glasperlenspiel mit " Ich bin Ich" .... On page 42 of my copy of Paul Marr's " Eine woche Voller Samstage" we get this little song "Knabberstangen, Klapperschlangen, Blumenvasen, Teppichrasen, Möbelbeine, Mauersteine, Jackenkragen, Kinderwagen, Taschentuch und Hut Schmecken mir so gut." Go on ... work out what the bits mean .... after all, it's good practice because lots of German words are made by sticking together smaller German words. At least Blumenvasen shouldn't be a problem . If you are really keen, you could try making up a similar "poem" yourself, using the same basic framework. It would most definitely be Terrific for Your German. And as for music, here's a fine Klee song ... "Erinner Dich" ...
