Unlike the book I talked about last time ( Zazie) these books use fairly simple language. Another good thing is that the books are gettable in English too, which certainly can be a big help.
Nick is, I suppose, about 8 or 9 and has a bunch of friends and enemies in school and out of it. Unlike his older alter ego, William Brown, much of the "action" is in school with their long-suffering teacher, and much of the humour derives from [a] their incredible ability to turn the simplest things into utter disaster and [b] their complete inability to understand adults.
Their teacher takes them to an Art Gallery. Chaos ensues. On the way back they ask their teacher when their next visit will be ... she points out that they won't be going again. Nick's reaction ... oh, she doesn't like art.
With every story, after the first few sentences you are busy trying to work out what exactly is going to go wrong ... it's quite addictive.And that's what you want when you are reading to learn .. a real reason to get those pages turned, a real want to understand what's going on.
