I think people think that dual-language books are a bit of a cheat ...... but used the right way they can be a terrific help with some aspects of language learning.
Here's a few ideas ..... things I've found useful about them ....
[a] For an obvious start, they're a great way to see how well you understand chunks of German. Cover up the English side, and translate what's written ... you can do it mentally or write it down .... and then see how you've got on. Then look more closely at any bits you've got wrong .... see if you can see what's happened.
[b] A more advanced version of this is to do it the other way round .... cover up the German side and try to put the English into German .... far far harder .... and it's harder to evaluate how well you have done as there are different ways a translated can Germanise a piece of English.
[c] Here's something I've found really really useful ... often when reading or listening to German there are certain words, verb forms, constructions, idioms etc that you just can't work out what the hell they are! It's really wonderful when you find any of these little beggars in a dual-language book because you can find out what the blasted things mean! Result!
[d] Dual-language books are a rich seam of handy phrases, exclamations, idiomatic expressions , put-downs, insults ..... it's pure gold folks!
[e] They're great to read when you're a bit tired and want to pretend that you are studying hard.
There's the Penguin ones ..... which are very good by the way .... partly because the stories aren't the usual boring old tripe ( the first Penguin Spanish dual-language one is an especially duff one in that respect) but interesting and often funny/peculiar ones ... I especially liked the Garden Gnome story!
I've got some other very odd dual-language German stuff ... there's one which is full of Westerns ,,, stories about cowboys etc ... very unlikely wouldn't you think ....and another which is a translation of T S Eliot's Practical Cats .... rather strange!
Tell you what .... i'll have a trundle through the Westerns one and show you some of the terrifically useful every days phrases you can find in it. how about that ?
And as for the music .... Wir sind Helden with the anthemic Denkmal ..........
Siehst du da drüben gleich da hinterm Wellblechzaun
Da drüben auf dem Platz vor Aldi haben sie
unser Abbild in Stein gehaun
