I suppose you could learn German by talking to lots of German speakers ... but there are snags ! For adults it is pretty inefficient for a start...... and if, like me, you don't actually know any German speakers, it's not really an option.
What you can do is read ..... read.... read ...read. It won't really do the job of teaching you to speak German, but it will do lots of other jobs in, I hope, an entertaining way.
So what will it do ?
... it will teach you lots of words.... and words are much more important than grammar.
... if you choose the right books, you will be thoroughly entertained.
... books are packed to the gills with grammar. Oh yes.
... so... be a grammar-spotter while you are reading.
... for example, the cases and their Der/Die/Das/Dem/Den/Dim/Dum/Dam stuff.
...then there's all that adjectival agreement stuff ... books are awash with that!
...books are crammed with sentence structures.... rather crucial in German actually.
.... so ... be a structure-collector.
... don't read passively ... make lots of notes, lists, little charts .... interact !
....books with pictures help you to understand what is going on and avoid terrible mistakes!
... so, to start with, read books with pictures.
... books will force you to notice and lawn idiomatic expressions.... eek !
Well, you get the idea. I'm a big fan of children's books myself, and I've learned to read Welsh by beginning with little board books with 12 words in ( I am a duck ..I am yellow) followed by dinky little books about Bears having their first day at school, and flies going up people's noses ... then on to Fireman Sam ( Sam Tân ) and SuperTed ( SwperTed) then the Roald Dahl books ( Charlie as Ffatri Siocled) and then on to real adult books ( Tinboethach ). Boy, that was fun!
In a recent post I recommended for goodish beginners the " Kleine Tiger" books by Janosch. This time I'm going to recommend some little books for the next level down...... for when you are getting started and you want a little, short sort of challenge which is also funny and beautiful. Like me.
The first German book I read was ..... Wir wollen uns wieder vertragen ......
Right, it's music time ..and my dinner time ..this is a really lovely piece of music .... Philipp Poisel ........ Mit jedem denier Fehler ...
und ich tu es doch.
Ich will nicht an dich denken,
und ich tu es immer noch.
Ich will nicht von dir reden,
vom Sehen ganz zu schweigen.
Schäm dich was, dass du dich immer noch
in meine Lieder schleichst.
Ich hab versucht mir einzureden,
dass du ja eigentlich garnicht so schön bist.
dass du bescheuer bist,
und nichts verstehst.
dass wir nicht füreinander bestimmt sind.
Mit jedem deiner Fehler
Mit jedem deiner Fehler
Mit jedem deiner Fehler
lieb'ich dich mehr.
Du bist so herrlich überheblich,
so wunderbar arrogant.
